Accomplishments

The Rainier Audubon Society has celebrated many accomplishments since it formed in 1978. We have had an impact over the past 40 years including:

Conservation and Restoration

Our conservation team has worked with cities and King County in government siting and planning processes, as well as participated in restoration and clean up projects in city and county green spaces and parks including the following projects:

  • Auburn Environmental Park, worked with the City of Auburn in the planning of the park.
  • Green River Natural Resource Area, participate in restoration work with the City of Kent including installation of tree snag posts for raptor perching.
  • King County siting of South King County Garbage and Recycle Transfer Station, participated in siting process of the garbage and recycle transfer station.
  • Peasley Canyon Heronry, Auburn, WA, worked with Washington Department of Transportation to protect nesting Great Blue Herons during the siting and construction of Highway 18.
  • Soos Creek, Kent, WA, work with Friends of Soos Creek on clean up and restoration of Soos Creek.
  • West Hylebos Wetlands Park, worked with the City of Federal Way, King County, and Friends of the Hylebos to conserve the West Hylebos Creek watershed and create the park.

Rainier Audubon leads annual field trips to local areas including the following birding hotspots:

  • 212th St. Pond, Kent
  • Boeing Pond and Kent Valley
  • Brown’s Point Lighthouse
  • Dash Point State Park
  • Dumas Bay
  • Enumclaw and the Enumclaw Plateau
  • Fife Tide Flats
  • Flaming Geyser State Park and the Auburn/Green River Valley
  • Kent Ponds (also known as the Green River Natural Resource Area)
  • M St. Marsh
  • Saltwater State Park
  • Soos Creek

Education and Outreach

Our Rainier Audubon education team engages with children and adults in community and school outreach programs in South King County and part of north Pierce County to explore birds and other wildlife, their habitats, and how to foster a healthy environment.

Advocacy

Rainier Audubon works with government and non-government organizations to promote policy and plans that support birds and wildlife and a healthy environment including the following projects:

  • King County Hylebos Creek and Lower Puget Sound Basin, member participation on citizen advisory committee for drafting of the basin plan.
  • King County Land Conservation Initiative, supporters of the initiative to conserve over 65,000 acres of high conservation lands in King County over the next 30 years
  • WRIA 10 LIO Ecosystem Recovery Plan for the Puyallup-White River Watershed, stakeholder collaborating in an ecosystem recovery plan for the Puyallup-White River watershed, and the Puget Sound.

Surveys and Bird Records

The Rainier Audubon provides bird survey data for conservation grant applications, land use development, and science and research studies.
