Auburn, WA

M Street Marsh is an important birding area in the Rainier Audubon Society territory. eBird lists over 170 bird species sighted, including many special migratory sightings: Whimbrel, Red-necked and Wilson’s Phalarope, White-faced Ibis, Solitary and Pectoral Sandpipers, and Black-necked Stilt. The area is also a popular place for raptor and waterfowl sightings. Salmon-bearing Mill Creek runs through the M Street Marsh and feeds into the Green River. Currently, the property consists of farmland and open space, although it is zoned for industrial use. The marsh is a convenient stopping point along the popular interurban trail, which runs along it.

Threat

Development in a portion of or all of these sensitive wetland areas is a real, and frightening,  possibility. One of the three property owners of the M Street Marsh posted 7.5 acres for sale for industrial development. At this point, no sale has occurred. Acquiring these creek/wetland/open area parcels would provide the opportunity to preserve and protect and enhance water quality and salmon and bird habitat.

Action

The Rainier Audubon Society (RAS) envisions preserving the M Street Marsh for continued bird habitat and as a place where people can explore nature. Restoration of Mill Creek and improving its salmon potential is also a high priority. Currently, the RAS is reaching out to government agencies and other stakeholders.
