That Quail Robert by Margaret A. Stanger

Book Review by Dolly Owen

I came across this book by accident, when looking for another. The paper book jacket was faded and worn, but underneath that was the front cover with lovely colored illustrations of quail feathers. This is a charming, true story about a woman who found an abandoned nest with an egg left in it. She takes it home with her and mothers it with warmth and love. It is born on a kitchen counter in a house in Cape Cod, and becomes a true member of the family, even joining them for meals at the table. Robert is entertaining, quirky and very particular. The book is short ( 127 pages ). It is a simple portrayal of a unique relationship between a sweet little bird and its human parents that he forms a special bond with.
